I have been purging since November of 2010.  And while purging can have some violent associations, let me liken it less to the popularized neatly folding of unwanted items and putting them in manageable piles as seen on TV to literally RAGING WAR on clutter, dust collectors, and the unused.

Every day I either throw something out or send guests home with an item or two.  Ask anyone of my friends and they’ll tell you I’ve turned into their Gifting Gramma.

I’ve set really unforgiving standards for my purge-osity:

1) If I didn’t know it was there, I probably don’t need it

2) If I don’t like it, I probably don’t want it

3) Do I need 100 of those?

4) Is it just time for this to move on? (teddybears?!)

5) If it’s not mine (ie 16mm film reels in the crisper), why is it in my tiny apartment?!

This list could go on and on, but what’s important to note is that it’s a GOOD thing. It’s amazing – ridding myself of all kinds of physical weight.  I feel lighter. My home feels lighter.  I’m renovating mind, body and soul without setting foot in a gym.  But the boys HATE it.

The conversation always begins the same way:

Me -  “So I’m renovating my apartment right now, it’s a time of upheaval.”

Them – “I’m sure it’s fine! Have you seen my [apartment/studio/parents house]? I’m sure you’re exaggerating.”

The door creaks ajar, and there’s an audible gasp.

Now, one could argue that inviting someone over (be it for coffee, tea, or me) should be reserved for the moments when one’s castle sparkles.  But this new me, the honest me, the purged me, risks first impressions to share the process.  And if they don’t like it, they can lump it.

After all it was Marilyn Monroe who said “if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best!”

And I’ll bet she had a FABULOUS apartment!

Ryan, I want to agree that if they don’t realize what a great quality is it – the ability to purge – than they are not worth it. Plus, without your purging I’d have no fabulous lamps in my condo, so please don’t ever quit. You’re my Gifting Grandma indeed.

A pleasure, Claudia. I may have a coffee table for you coming soon… also, you have to see my new and improved streamlined couch (which replaced a useless loveseat)!

    I’ll take something cool ;)
