Maybe Fate Does Exist? written by Katherine Watts

This time last year, I was fresh out of one of those (really) long-term, roller coaster-ride relationships that make you feel like shit every other day of the week.

Oh, I was also unemployed, and for all the jobs I was applying for, apparently not qualified. Tired of constant resume updates and endless cover letters, I took what little money I had from leftover student loans and took off to Europe as fast, and for as long, as I could.

It was the best decision I’ve ever made. The months I spent exploring, relaxing and connecting with foreign family members were so therapeutic that it was easy to put heartbreak behind me and just enjoy the world.

Then, while running out of money in Paris wondering what the hell I would do when I returned home to my roommate (read: mother) money-less, job-less and significant-other-less, I decided to check my email. An old co-worker had forwarded me a job posting for a sweet position in my field. Used to spending a ton of time to apply for jobs, only to be ignored and never hired, I only absentmindedly applied before heading to the Louvre for a day of beaux art. Then, I put it behind me.

You can imagine my surprise when I returned from Europe to an interview opportunity, and eventually job at that perfect place.

Even more surprising was the man I met there.

I didn’t realize someone like him existed. Daniel just understands the way I see the world—because he sees it the same way. What we have is honest-to-goodness love, equal parts true respect and intense attraction.

I never thought I’d say this, but I’m so happy I didn’t get any of those hundreds of jobs that I spent countless hours applying to. I’m so grateful I was broken-hearted, because it gave me time to heal. I’m so happy I ran out of money and had to come home. Because while my plan this time last year was to just find a goddamn job, what I ended up with is so much better.

Is it possible to be so lucky?
